For most people who visit the University of Glasgow, which has recently been named the most ‘Instagrammed’ university in Scotland, what immediately stands out are the Neo-gothic buildings, innumerable statues, and the hilltop location, which makes it look straight out a fairy tale novel. And it seems like the university has taken this fantasy element literally by announcing a new research centre that will be dedicated to focus on, you guessed right, fantasy.
“We’re excited to launch the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic – the first research centre in the world to focus solely on #fantasy! The centre will bring together the biggest group of academics working in this field,” read a tweet from the University of Glasgow’s official twitter account.

The new research centre comes five years after the university created the world’s first-ever masters in Fantasy Literature. The new centre, led by Dr. Dimitra Fimi and Dr. Rob Maslen will explore different aspects of fantasy in art, illustration, gaming, fantasy in literature and TV, including the ways in which we imagine the future of earth.
Fimi has further added that the new research will help the university expand and work with more students and work closely with fan communities. She was quoted, “To explore the possibilities of fantasy, as a mode of expression. And of course, Glasgow is exactly the right place to be doing all of this. We are surrounded in this ancient university with artistic expressions of the fantastic in its very architecture.”
