Safety has taken on an all-new meaning ever since the COVID-19 pandemic began, especially in terms of health. And the newly released list by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reflects this as one of its parameters. The list has charted 60 of the world’s safest cities for 2021, which include two cities from India. This list is based on 76 indicators of digital, health, infrastructure, environmental and personal security, reports The Wire. Copenhagen is the safest city in the world to live in, according to the list, while India’s Delhi and Mumbai feature on the 48th and 50th positions, respectively.

According to the list, the top 10 safest cities in the world are:
- Copenhagen – 82.4
- Toronto- 82.2
- Singapore – 80.7
- Sydney – 80.1
- Tokyo – 80
- Amsterdam – 79.3
- Wellington – 79
- Hong Kong – 78.6
- Melbourne – 78.6
- Stockholm – 78
Times Now News reports that Mumbai scored 54.4 while Delhi scored 56.1 in their overall scores. While Mumbai ranks 44 in health security, it’s placed at the 48th position in terms of infrastructure security.

Delhi, on the other hand, ranks 41st in personal security and 49th in environmental security. Both the cities fall lower than the ranks of Beijing (36), Bogota (41), Ho Chi Minh City (45). The fallback lays on the factors determining personal security which is measured by the prevalence of petty or violent crimes, organised crime, the severity of terrorist attacks, deaths from substance use disorders, level of corruption, laws on domestic violence and sexual harassment, among other indicators, says Moneycontrol.
On individual factors, Delhi and Mumbai’s rankings are as follows:
- Personal security: Delhi is ranked at 41, with a score of 52.8, while Mumbai ranks at 50 with a score of 48.2.
- Digital Security: Delhi is ranked at 48, with a score of 47.5, while Mumbai ranks at 53 with a score of 45.4.
- Health Security: Delhi ranks at 40, with a score of 63.6, while Mumbai is at 44 with a score of 60.8.
- Infrastructure Security: Delhi stands at 44th position, with a score of 59.8, while Mumbai ranks at 48 with a score of 57.3.
- Environmental Security: Delhi ranks at 49 with a score of 56.8, and Mumbai ranks at 46 with a score of 60.1.
