The report reveals even more numbers. It mentions that 90 destinations including countries, territories, or states have partially or completely shut their borders for tourists. Forty-four per cent of places are shut for tourists belonging to a selected few countries. The list also presents a breakdown of this data by region. This breakdown reveals that 100 per cent of Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East has imposed tourist entry restrictions from January onwards. Europe has 93 per cent restriction while the US has 92 per cent.
Here’s what the UNWTO means by travel restrictions:
- A total or partial seal down of state/country borders.
- Destination-specific travel restrictions (“Passengers who have transited or been in x are not allowed to enter x”).
- Total or partial suspension of flights.
- Other things like self-isolation, quarantine, medical certificates or the suspension of visa issuances.

Talking about the report, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “COVID-19 has impacted travel and tourism like no other event before in history. Governments have put public health first and introduced full or partial restrictions on travel. With tourism suspended, the benefits the sector brings are under threat: millions of jobs could be lost, and progress made in the fields of equality and sustainable economic growth could be rolled back.” (as reported by Times of India)
Not only did he highlight the current scenario, but he also urged the governments to ease or lift these restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so. “UNWTO, therefore, calls on governments to continuously review travel restrictions and ease or lift them as soon as it is safe to do so,” he added.
