After having added over 23 gender and nine sexual preference options on Tinder, the dating app has now even added a ‘traveller alert’ for members of the LGBTQ+ community. The ‘traveller alert’ aims to safeguard these users when they travel to a country where their dating preferences could put them at a legal risk. Once activated, the feature will automatically hide users’ profiles to protect them against law enforcement. Users can even choose to have a public profile, but with their sexual orientation or gender identity remaining concealed. The ‘traveller alert’, however, will only come into play when users are on the grounds of non-LGBTQ+ friendly nations and possess a Tinder Passport to connect and match with people globally.

Tinder worked in association with the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) to ensure every country is tapped into. According to the ILGA, 70 nations still criminalise same-sex relationships to varying extents. In countries such as Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran, Sudan and Somalia, LGBTQ+ people could face death penalty, while in 26 countries life imprisonment could be enforced. On the flip side, nine countries including South Africa, Sweden, and Nepal provide constitutional protection against sexual discrimination.
