In a recent research conducted by Columbus Direct, a travel insurance company, Taj Mahal has emerged to be the most googled monument in the world. It even beat the monuments like Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, London Eye, and Stonehenge, etc.
Located in Agra, this symbol of love is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With 14,17,650 monthly searches across the globe and over 1.3 million tags on Instagram, the monument has managed to beat Machu Picchu in Peru, which garners 12,69,260 monthly searches worldwide.
Built in the 17th century, by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for wife Mumtaz Mahal, Taj Mahal houses the duo’s tomb, and its white marble attracts tourists from all over the world, including celebrities, politicians and more.
During the research, Google’s Keyword Planner was used as a tool to gauge top-performing keywords, so as to find out the most-searched landmarks across the globe.
While Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates grabbed the third position with 11,03,950 monthly searches worldwide, Niagara Falls, spanning the border of the US and Canada was at fourth with 9,45,810 searches, and Eiffel Tower in France stood at fifth spot with 9,16,270 monthly searches worldwide.

The Taj Mahal, often preferred by tourists as a background for best possible selfies, has more to it on the inside. The mausoleum contains marble cenotaphs honouring Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal decorated with floral designs using semi-precious stones and surrounded by a carved marble screen.
Overcrowding has been a major problem for the monument, and to curb it, the authorities have increased ticket prices for both Indian nationals as well as foreign visitors. However, the place still witnesses tens of thousands of visitors every day.
