Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), which is South Asia’s largest hospitality company has recently announced that it will be using solar energy to power its hotels after a solar energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed between the former and TP Kirnali Solar Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power Company (TPC), and this agreement is valid for a period of 35 years.
Three IHCL hotels in Mumbai, The Taj Mahal Palace, Taj Lands End, and Taj Wellington Mews are set to get around 60 per cent energy from solar thereby reducing nearly 22.9 million kilograms of CO2 emissions yearly, which roughly translates to a carbon reduction that would be equivalent to 7,200 cars off the road.

“This initiative is in line with the company’s focus on adopting sustainable and cost-efficient business practices and we are pleased to collaborate with Tata Power, which is a leader in clean energy generation,” said IHCL Managing Director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal (as reported on Hotelier India.com).
In the last four years alone IHCL has increased its energy mix from 7 per cent to 25 per cent. Additionally, the hotel company has also created a record benchmark in environmental sustainability for hospitality after 78 of its hotels were awarded the EarthCheck Platinum, Gold and Silver certifications.
“Presently, the association is limited to IHCL properties in Mumbai and we look forward to working closely with them for covering all their facilities across India,” said Praveer Sinha, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Power. Energy minister Nitin Raut had also recently held a meeting with government officials on ways to implement more solar power projects that will help reduce the dependency on thermal power.
