Low-cost carriers, SpiceJet and IndiGo, which currently operate from terminal 2 (T2) of the Indira Gandhi international Airport (IGIA), New Delhi will shift operations to terminal 3 (T3) from September 5 onward. Here’s everything you need to know. By Kumar Shree
If you have a SpiceJet or IndiGo flight booked out of Delhi any time after September 5, you might want to check out the terminal column on your ticket twice. These carriers will shift their operations from terminal 2 to terminal 3 starting September 5. IndiGo, the largest flight operator in terms of market share will shift the operation of its 5000-5999 series flights to terminal 3 from the current terminal 2. SpiceJet on the other hand will shift its entire operation from T2 to T3.

As of now, the two carriers operate collectively out of terminal 1 and terminal 2. The flights of the respective carriers operating from terminal 1 will remain unaffected of this shifting. This shift is being implemented to facilitate the revamp work at terminal 2, which will enhance its capacity of handling a 15 million passengers per year at present and raise it to that of handling 18 million passengers per year. The entire enhancement work would take around six months to complete.

The GoAir flights operating from T2 will remain unaffected of the changes and will continue to operate as usual. The other carriers operating from the T3 are again, the no-frills carrier AirAsia, and the full-service carriers Air India and Vistara. As of now the IGIA is equipped to handle 75 million passengers in a year, and the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGIA plans of expanding the capacity to a 100 million passengers by 2022.
As part of the expansion plan, terminal 1D (departure) and 1C (arrival) will be merged into Terminal 1, and Terminal 2 will be demolished for a new terminal 4 to be constructed there.
