Hey, Delhi folks! If you believe in the saying – ‘Drink Beer Save Water’, and if Budweiser, Hoegaarden and Stella Artois happen to be one of your favourite beer brands, then you are in for some tough times ahead. By Kumar Shree
After detecting a discrepancy at the hands of world’s largest beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), where the company sneaked bottles with duplicated barcodes in the Delhi market that allowed them to pay lower taxes than what they were supposed to, the Delhi government has decided to take some strict action. They have banned the company from selling their products in Delhi market for the next three years.
Not only this, the Delhi government has also sealed two warehouses belonging to AB InBev in the capital city. Now, what does that mean for you? It means that the company is blacklisted from Delhi market for the next three years, thus blocking AB InBev from selling any fresh stock of their products in the market. So, you would only get your hands at a bottle of Budweiser, Hoegaarden and Stella Artois beers till the old stock lasts.
However, things can change for Ab InBev if they decide to appeal against the government orders. Seems like the company might appeal soon, as there’s a catch in the case when you trace the entire event. The catch is called SABMiller. The government during its investigation found that it was SABMiller, which earlier owned these beer brands that used to duplicate barcodes on its beer bottles in order to get away with paying proper taxes.
SABMiller was later acquired by AB InBev for a whooping 100 billion dollars in the year 2016. As the AB InBev acquired SABMiller, it also bought a haunting djinn in the bottle, that has appeared three years later and will keep haunting the company for the next three years, or would leave only after incurring huge fine if they choose to appeal.
This surely comes as a big blow not only for beer lovers, but also the company, as Delhi is one of the most prominent and fastest-growing markets in the country.
