At an event on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India is set to introduce a special AYUSH visa category, for international passengers who wish to visit India to avail traditional medicine. Here’s what we know so far. By Anushka Goel
At the inauguration of the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Gandhinagar on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India will soon introduce a special AYUSH visa category for international travellers who want to come to the country and benefit from traditional medicine and treatment styles, reports The Print. World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was also present at the event. Talking at the event, the Prime Minister said that the aim of this visa was to make accessing the AYUSH therapies easier, writes The Indian Express. The PM added that the Centre has decided on various activities and initiatives to promote the AYUSH sector, including establishing a digital portal to connect farmers who grow medicinal plants with the AYUSH product manufacturers.

Apart from introducing the visa, the Prime Minister also noted that “Heal in India” could become this decade’s big brand, adding that the country is also developing an AYUSH mark to certify high-quality herbal products, reports Tribune. At the event, the WHO DG noted, “Long term strategic investments and government commitment needed to support innovation, innovators. The government needs to develop traditional medicine in a sustainable way, bringing traditional medicine to market must make sure communities that gave this knowledge also benefits out of it”, reports The Print.
India has been working to promote traditional medicine and ayurveda for a long time now. These new strategies will help certify traditional treatments and help people across the globe avail them better by providing easier access to them.
