A proposal for separate sections for passengers’ pets has been authorised by North Eastern Railway (NER) officials. The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NER Pankaj Kumar implied that to make enough room for pet cages for the pets of passengers, the power carriages of trains would be remodelled.
North Eastern Railways: Work on modelling separate space for pets has begun
Up till now, the arrangement of travelling with pets applied to people travelling in complete AC coaches on the reservation of the entire compartment. But now, the revised provision is assumed to make travelling with pets cost-effective. The North Eastern Railway workshop has begun working on this initiative, for a separate section for pets. The CPRO has confirmed that the service will be given on demand.
What are the current rules for travelling with pets on Indian Railways?
The whole four berths or coupe-two must be reserved in AC First Class only if passengers are travelling with pets has been a strict rule by the Indian Railways. Additionally, pet reservations cannot be made before the scheduled travelling date. This further means that owners will have to reach the station one hour before the departure time of the train to make the reservation at the counters then and there. The present rules by the Indian Railways also claim that no pets will be allowed in AC two-tier, AC three-tier, AC chair car, second-class, and sleeper class compartments of the train.

Trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express have provisions for Dog Kennels. Dog Boxes are permitted in second-class luggage along with brake vans for passengers to ship their pets. However, if the pet is travelling along with its pet parent in a passenger compartment, INR 60 per kilogram will be charged.
