If you’re in Mumbai, there’s hardly a chance that you haven’t seen the city’s iconic double-decker bus. The carriers have been plying on Mumbai’s roads for decades, and now, they’ve just been made fancier.
To beat the sultry summer heat, the City of Dreams has become home to the country’s first electric AC double-decker bus. The vehicle was inaugurated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) on February 13. However, the buses aren’t ready for commuters just yet.

At the moment, the regional transport agency in Mumbai hasn’t completed its registration process, which may take another two-three days. It is only after this process is finished that the new vehicles will start to ply the city’s roads. Reports add that by the end of March, Mumbai will have 20 such electric AC double-decker buses.
According to News18, the BEST has ordered 200 of these buses from a start-up called SWITCH. The company built the first British-made pure electric buses for London. Lokesh Chandra, General Manager, BEST, said, “Fulfilling the vision of green and clean mobility of PM Shri Narendra Modi, procurement of these buses is done under the National Clean Air Program (NCAP). With an attempt to make public transport in Mumbai at par with global standards, these electro double-decker AC buses will provide world-class travel experience to Mumbaiites.”

The price for the ticket will be INR 6 for five kilometres, which is the same as before. The bus comes with CCTV cameras and automatic doors and can be fully charged in 80 minutes.
