
Manohar International Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 11, 2022 (Sunday). Also known as Mopa International Airport, this is the 2nd airport established in Goa. It is named after the late Manohar Parrikar, the former chief minister of Goa. The airport will be operational for domestic flights starting January 5, 2022.
The airport code for Mopa International Airport is GOX. Indigo has declared 168 weekly flights to and from the new airport. They will immediately connect the new airport to major cities across India, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Hyderabad. Even GO First has announced that it will be scheduling 42 non-stop flights through the new Goa airport.

The new airport in Goa will be operated by the GMR Group (Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao), the Indian multinational conglomerate that is responsible for running Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. It is developed at a cost of around INR 2,870 crore and built around the theme of sustainability. The foundation of the greenfield airport was laid by the Prime Minister in November 2016.

The first phase of the airport has been planned in a manner that it will have the capacity to handle 44 lakh passengers per year. Once the entire project will be completed, it will go up to one crore. The new airport will have facilities for cargo transportation as well, according to NDTV.

The new international airport is in North Goa, unlike the first Goa International Airport, which is in South Goa. Mopa airport is situated in the Pernem district. It is about 30 kilometres away from Panjim, the capital of Goa. The Goa International Airport is in the Dabolim district, and it is 55 kilometres away from Mopa Airport and 26 kilometres away from Panjim. The Dabolim airport will not close and will remain operational.
