The underwater metro tunnel in Kolkata nears completion
If you are eagerly looking forward to commuting in India’s first underwater metro tunnel, your wait is soon going to end. According to the latest media reports, the construction of the underwater tunnel on the East-West corridor of the Kolkata Metro will be completed by next year. The tunnel is being made inside the Hooghly river.
520 metres of the total 16.6-km-long east-west stretch will be under the riverbed. The tunnel corridor is being constructed 33 metres below the riverbed. This is the first time that a transport tunnel is being made inside a river in India. The 16.6-kilometre-long underground metro will run through the city of Kolkata—with a part of it laid beneath the River Hooghly and will connect Salt Lake and Howrah.

According to reports, the tunnel will also feature walkways for emergency evacuations. These passages will help in taking out passengers from the train in case a technical problem is encountered inside the underwater tunnel. The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation is leaving no stone unturned in making the Kolkata East-West Metro line fully operational by 2023.
Nearly 80 percent of the construction work of the East-West Howrah Metro station has been completed. The East-West corridor of the Kolkata Metro stretches for 15km and spans between Salt Lake Stadium and Howrah. Important stations on the line include Salt Lake Sector-5, Karunamayi, Central Park, City Center, and Bengal Chemical.
