Much like everything else, the Kalka-Shimla train was also put on an indefinite halt since March 2020, when the country had set on a series of lockdowns to contain the spread of Coronavirus. However, the train has finally returned to the tracks from October 21.

The Kalka-Shimla train runs between Kalka station in Haryana to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. Ever since its inception in 2019, the train has gained popularity among travellers, not to mention the Vistadome coaches that attract even more passengers. With a seating capacity of 36, these coaches come equipped with a glass roof, modified windows, air-conditioning system, designer LED lights, window blinds and cushioned wooden interiors. Travellers can take in an expansive view of the beautiful journey through large windows.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also tweeted about the train, saying, “The festival-special train between Kalka and Shimla will start operations from October 21. The train will enhance ease of movement and provide a big boost to the tourism and hospitality sector. Take all the necessary precautions while travelling for a safe & happy journey.”

Since the festive season is just around the corner, bookings have been opened for only a few days. The authorities are taking care of all the precautionary measures, and a small booking window has been kept to avoid overcrowding at any time.
As of now, the train is operating as a Kalka-Shimla Festival Special. Other than this, the Indian Railways has also started 392 special trains from October 20, 2020, to November 30, 2020. Since festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath Puja fall during this duration, these special trains to major destinations like Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow and Kolkata have been introduced to help people travel easily and safely to their respective hometowns.
The 95.5-kilometre Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway line was inducted in the list of UNESCO World Heritage in 2008.
