In an attempt to make train journeys safer and more comfortable, the Indian Railways has decided to bring 20 new ‘Made In India’ innovations, such as CCTV monitoring inside the coaches, the printing of unreserved tickets via an app, the ringing of bell alert passengers about the departure, etc.
Apart from the technical innovations aimed at improving safety, some changes have been made keeping in mind the comfort of the passengers as well.
While the North Central Railways has come up with a vehicular system to detect the ultrasonic flaw, Eastern Railways’ Malda division has introduced pyrometers to monitor speed and temperature on the rail tracks. Similarly, the Allahabad division of North Central Railway has developed a detector for a much earlier warning of a possible derailment. Moreover, the Western Railways has introduced natural water coolers, which instead of consuming any electricity, work on the principle of heat transfer.

Furthermore, there is also a bell system already in place at the Allahabad junction railway station to alert passengers two minutes before the departure. As many as 18 coaches of Humsafar trains have been equipped with real-time CCTV monitoring system inside the coaches. The Northern Railways has started issuing unreserved tickets via apps and Bluetooth printers to make it contactless during the pandemic.
Other safety measures that have been taken by the Indian Railways in its new post-COVID-19 coaches include foot-operated soap dispensers and toilet flush, anti-microbial copper-coated door handles, plasma air equipment to sterilise the air inside AC coaches, etc.
