On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Deoghar Airport, the second international airport in Jharkhand. Here’s all that we know about this new addition to the aviation industry in India. By Anushka Goel
Jharkhand recently got its second international airport, years after the international flights commenced on the Ranchi Airport. This new airport, in Deoghar, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (July 12). What’s more, the Prime Minister also launched several development projects in the state, totalling a worth of INR 16,835 crores. The foundation for the airport was laid by the Prime Minister on May 25, 2018.

This is the second international airport in Jharkhand and has been built with a budget of INR 401 crores. This port is set to ease travel into the state, allowing for dispersal of passenger flow for ease of access and an increased number of flights into the state.
The airport is spread across 653.75 acres of land, and built over an area of 4,000 square metres. It consists of six check-in counters, two baggage belts, and a 2,500-metre-long runway – big enough to land and take off AirBus 320-type aircrafts. What’s more, the airport can handle a load of up to 200 passengers during peak hours. It featured glimpses of local tribal art and culture to welcome tourists into the state.
What’s more, the airport will also prove economically beneficial to Jharkhand, especially the locals.
How Deoghar Airport will help boost the economy
The airport is set to be a great addition to the state, helping boost the local economy and aiding tourism, especially to nearby religious sites. What’s more, it will also boost employment for locals, especially the youth, bringing about tourism-related economic activities. Here’s how it’ll help:
Aiding economic development
According to FirstPost, every INR 100 spent will bring about a return of INR 325 to the country’s economy, and each job will lead to 6.1 indirect jobs, too.

The Deoghar Airport will help boost regional connectivity and tourism, opening avenues for stakeholders to boost jobs and open up employment opportunities. What’s more, the airport is set to make access to the Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, a lot easier than it is now.
Focus on sustainability
The airport has a green terminal, with a double insulated roofing system and canopies to efficiently save energy. What’s more, it comes complete with LED lighting, low heat gain glazing and a lot more to cut down the consumption of power and help promote the green message.
Moreover, the airport will make use of natural sources of energy such as harvested rainwater and solar energy panels. The structure also houses a sewage treatment plant to efficiently clean up wastewater and make it usable.
A boost to the aviation sector
The Deoghar airport will allow for flights and helicopters to land here, enhancing the use of air carriers. It’ll help boost maintenance and security services, writes FirstPost. In addition, new jobs will be created in terms of cargo handling, maintenance, aerospace manufacturing and more, boosting both the actual industries and the education sector for the same.
