As of now, a large number of tourists drive from Dehradun to Mussoorie. This not only raises the pollution level but also creates huge parking problems. The Dehradun Mussoorie ropeway on one hand will boost the area’s tourism, on the other it will free Mussoorie of its parking and pollution woes. The ropeway consisting of 53 cabins on both up and down tracks can take up to 1,000 to 1,200 people at once.

The ambitious Dehradun Mussoorie ropeway is a dream project for Uttarakhand Tourism department. The state government is also working towards an infrastructure for picking tourists from bus stands, railway stations, and airports to the ropeway. This will ease the burden of on-road transportation systems and will also introduce more people to this new mode of transit. The ropeway will start from Purkulgaon Village in Dehradun and will drop tourists at MDDA Taxi Stand, Library Chowk in Mussoorie.

The 300-crore project was in the pipeline for almost 12 years but could not manage forest clearances. Now that it has received clearances, it will take around three years to be up and running. The ropeway will be 5.5 kilometres in length with two terminal stations in between. It will have 1,037 metres of vertical rise. Other ropeways falling on the list of the longest in the world are Mi Teleferico in La Paz, Bolivia; Ba Na Hills Cable Car in Da Nang, Vietnam; and The Ngong Ping 360 in Hong Kong.
