Mumbaikars were up for a beautiful surprise on Monday. The iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is bathing in beautifully-lit tri-colour glory. The station has been illuminated with tri-colour lights to mark the 75 years of India’s independence from British rule. This has been done as part of the “Azadi ki Rail Gadi aur Stations” celebrations.
The “Azadi ki Rail Gadi aur Stations” week is being held as part of the Indian government’s initiative Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The initiative aims to celebrate India’s glorious history, culture, achievements, and people on its 75th Independence Day.

The Indian Railways has selected 75 stations to mark the 75 years of India’s independence. These stations played an important role in the freedom struggle. They hold immense national importance. To mark the “Azadi ki Rail Gadi aur Stations” week, these stations will be drenched in patriotic fervour from July 18 to 23.
From tri-coloured lights to short film screenings on digital displays and sound and light shows, travellers will be able to reflect on India’s past glory. Street plays and patriotic songs will also be played at the stations. The railways will even host photo exhibitions and set up selfie points at the selected stations.

Among the 27 trains, nine beautifully-decorated trains of Western Railway will be flagged off by freedom fighters and their family members. Passengers will also get to learn historical facts about the trains. Some of the trains that have been chosen include Lokshakti Express, Ashram Express, Sabarmati Express, Ahimsa Express, Gujarat Mail, Ahmedabad-New Delhi Rajdhani Express etc.
The Indian Railways has also selected five stations on Western Railway to remember Mahatama Gandhi and his fight for the independence of the nation through various photo exhibitions. These stations are Porbandar, Sabarmati, Navsari, Adas Road, and Bardoli.
