Flood-hit Assam has been facing a major loss of life and property every day, as the death toll is rising by the day, as many as 36 lakh people have been affected across 26 districts. Out of the total number of deceased, some have reportedly died due to the floods, and the rest have been killed by landslides.

As per a report by the Assam Disaster Management Authority, Dhubri has been the worst hit of all the 26 districts, where alone over 5.5 lakh people have been affected. However, rescue operations are underway, both by the National Disaster Response Force, as well as the State Disaster Response Force.

“#AssamFloods2020#TEAMNDRFINDIA of @1Ndrf carried out Night Flood rescue ops in village Bohrighat, Chenga Circle, Barpeta, Assam & evacuated 103 marooned villagers (M-38, F-27 & Ch-38),” Director General of NDRF, Satya Narayan Pradhan tweeted.

“Our Govt is working on a war footing to provide all necessary assistance to the flood-affected people. District admin, @assampolice, SDRF, @NDRFHQ & other depts are rescuing the marooned people,” said Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Moreover, at least 95 per cent of Kaziranga has already been submerged, which has resulted in the death of at least 66 animals. The authorities have so far rescued 102 animals from the flooded national park and tiger reserve.

Furthermore, in an attempt to lend a helping hand in the fight against the calamity, several organisations and rock bands have come forward to collect funds. Some of them include NEADS — North-East Affected Development Society – an NGO which is collecting funds both for the floods as well as for the pandemic — GOONJ, Action Aid, Earthful Foundation, Rapid response, etc., all are open for donations. Bands such as Bottle Rockets India, Voice of Northeast India and People for People have been organising e-concerts to raise funds. Apart from that, the Wildlife Trust of India in collaboration with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, has been aiding in the rescue of the severely affected fauna.
