Andaman and Nicobar Islands have successfully managed to vaccinate 100 percent of their target population. By Karan Kaushik
Here’s why it is safer to travel to Andaman and Nicobar Islands now
The Union Territory is now among the few states and Union territories that have achieved 100 percent double dose COVID vaccination. Himachal Pradesh was the first to reach this target. According to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration, the target has been reached by administering only Covishield doses. The news comes amidst concerns about the rising cases of the new omicron variant.
Tye UT administration took to its official Twitter account to share the good news with the country. “A&N achieved 100 percent Covid vaccine coverage making it 1st State/UT to achieve the feat using only Covishield. UT Admin overcame insurmountable odds for this extraordinary feat in one of the remotest parts of the world,” it tweeted.

In another Twitter post, the administration said that it was an extremely challenging task to vaccinate 100 percent of its target population. “”Vaccination in A&N was extremely challenging as the UT is spread over 836 islands spread over 800 km from north to south separated by rough Sea, extremely dense jungle, hills & exposed to inclement weather,” the tweet said.
According to the administration, health workers travelled to the remotest parts of the Union Territory by land, sea, and air. In a tweet, it said that the health staff trekked through dense forests and crossed crocodile-infested waters to achieve this feat.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands joined the rest of the country earlier this year in January and began its vaccination drive from January 16. As far as the vaccination numbers are concerned, according to an official health bulletin, the administration has vaccinated 2.87 lakh people with both doses of the Covishield vaccine. The target was set at 2.86 lakh beneficiaries. Around 74 percent of the total population of the Union Territory has been vaccinated.
At present, there are only three active cases of coronavirus in the Union Territory.
