Malaysia’s budget airline carrier AirAsia will resume its domestic operations from July, said Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer, in light of the government easing Coronavirus restrictions in the country.

Malaysia is one of the few nations that have successfully curbed the Coronavirus outbreak leading to the country partially opening up. The country allowed resuming of interstate travel, as part of the government’s plan to revive the economy of this Southeast Asian country.
Fernandes was quoted saying to reporters during a company event, according to an article on Business Times— “We’re seeing very strong demand. Very, very strong. People want to fly, people want to go home, they want to resume business.” He also added that the flights will run in full capacity, keeping in line with the government’s guidelines.

The airline group also plans to expand its cargo business by way of transporting fresh produce directly from farmers to businesses through a dedicated platform called ‘OurFarm.’ The platform will also be used to provide fresh produce for AirAsia’s inflight food network, Santan.

Malaysia currently has 8,525 confirmed cases of the virus at the time of writing this article (June 18, 2020, 03:30 pm IST). Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Malaysia and accounts for approximately 16 per cent of the GDP contribution.
