With over 29 million (2.9 crores) passengers last year, the Dubai International Airport (DXB) has retained its spot as the busiest international airport, states a report in Business Line. The report has been released by the agency Official Aviation Guide (OAG), which collects data from all the bookings, takeoffs, landings, and more and consolidates it into real-time feeds and trends analyses for travellers and airline companies to use and interpret.

While Dubai has retained the top spot in this category for the eighth consecutive year, the country’s airport ranks as the second busiest globally, with the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) clocking in at the top spot.
According to Khaleej Times, DXB’s annual traffic exceeded its traffic forecasts for the year by more than half a million passengers, with a total of 29,110,609 travellers in 2021. This is being credited to a strong quarter, which saw several tourists visiting the country. This could also have been because of the ongoing Dubai Expo 2020. India continues to be its top destination in terms of passenger volume, writes Business Line.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, spoke about the country achieving this feat, especially in times of the pandemic. He said, “Despite unprecedented turmoil affecting millions of people all over the world, we overcame serious obstacles to the operation of the world’s largest international hub and provided smooth, comfortable and safe travel for millions of people travelling through DXB. This incredible performance by our staff and stakeholders was achieved in the face of abruptly changing travel regulations and concerns about new waves of infection. Despite these challenges to our ongoing success, we managed to exceed our own forecasts and continue to retain our crown as the world’s busiest international airport,” reports Khaleej Times.
