In the wake of plastic pollution, UAE flag carrier Etihad Airways decided to ditch all plastic products on flights. With this initiative, the airlines claimed the first position among all the airlines in the Gulf region to operate without any single-use plastics on board.
Identifying the extensive use of single-use plastic products in its aircraft cabins, Etihad Airways took this big step towards sustainability starting with flight EY484 that landed in Brisbane on April 22, 2019 — Earth Day. The airlines discovered the usage of over 95 single-use plastic products that are available across its aircraft cabins.
Etihad Airways has pledged to reduce the availability of single-use plastic by 80 percent in all of its flights and also across the entire organisation by the end of 2022 — they stated.
The guests on board were served alternative products such as sustainable amenity kits, eco-thread blankets that are constructed out of recycled plastic bottles, tablet toothpaste and edible coffee cups. The children on board enjoyed eco-friendly plush toys, too.
Adding further to the statement, the organisation committed to removing up to 20 percent of the single-use plastic items on board by June 1.The airlines also announced that by the end of the year they will have removed 100 tonnes of single-use plastics from its inflight services.
