OPA KIPOS

If you cannot go to Greece, don’t be disappointed. Enter Opa Kipos to be transported to Santorini with the blue and white decor and pink floral creepers. It’s the prettiest new restaurant to open in Mumbai of late, and is large enough to accommodate 180 people. Originally in The Fairmont Dubai, this is Opa Kipos’ first opening in the country. It has everything Greek and Mediterranean you can think of—from hummus, salad, kebabs, manti, moussaka to even Greek-style pizzas. Do try their signature Canadian Lobster Orzo. The desserts come with their own theatrics and drama, but it doesn’t stop there. There are Zorba dancers and the Greek tradition of plate smashing, too!

SETTE MARA
For those craving a taste of the Middle East in a trendy setting, Chef Reuben has curated a menu spanning countries like Georgia, Persia, Egypt, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon and, of course, Greece. When at the new restaurant Sette Mara at The St. Regis Mumbai, sample hot and cold mezzes like Hummus Beiruti, muhammara, garlic labneh, Israeli couscous risotto, and the khachapuri bar which is all about Georgian bread. The cocktail menu is varied, but its selection of oak-barrel aged Negronis are most in demand. Our vote goes to the Luxury Boulevardier and the Crystal Truffle Negroni.

THE CRAFTERY BY SUBKO
Bandra’s most popular café, Subko Coffee Roasters & Bakehouse, has opened a sprawling space at a converted printing press in Byculla East with a roastery and a bakehouse. Taking cue from wineries and breweries overseas, The Craftery by Subko lets you watch the production process. So, delve into the legendary 27-layer croissants along with hot and cold brews while watching sourdough loaves being prepared in a glass cold-room while enjoying the aroma of coffee beans being ground. Apart from hot and cold brews, some of the other bestseller bakery items from the Bandra outlet remain. But they are also experimenting with baked goodies, hence a few dishes on the menu will change every 15 days. Currently, they are offering a rhubarb pop tart where the berry is sourced from a farm in Ooty, post which the jam is made in-house.

GOODNESS OF DAIRY (GOD) CAFÉ BY HARRIT FARMS
Vegetarian, Ayurvedic and sattvik food made with cold-pressed oils and ghee take you back to your roots at this cafe. However, do not think that this is tasteless! Made with A2 milk from Gir cows reared at a farm close to Mumbai, the food pleases the palate even as it keeps out white sugar, flour and white salt. Think salads, cold-pressed juices, wellness shots, milkshakes, upma, sev batata puri, multigrain paratha and so much more. Do not miss the walnut sheera—the brainchild of Sheetal Bhatt who’s an Ayurveda specialist.

The Pan-Asian food menu here offers everything from sushi, baos, dimsums, curries to classics. PLURAL
Flavours from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam tickle your palate at Plural, a restaurant that offers only vegetarian dishes. Vedant Shah opened it when he realised that the Pan-Asian cuisine at restaurants in Mumbai do not include fare from these nations. “I was drawn to the freshness and vibrancy of Southeast Asian cuisine from these three countries with a generous use of spices and fresh herbs that resonated well with the Indian palette,” says Shah. The winners here are the summer rolls, Vietnamese pizza and the whole-roasted head of cauliflower. Emphasising sustainability, vegetable waste is also used. For example, the mushroom trimmings are turned into mushroom dust that makes its way into the cocktails (they have 12 signature cocktails and four beers on tap). Everything is sourced locally.

JOSHI HOUSE

Can you picture a Rajasthani haveli on a busy street in Bandra? Enter Joshi House and you leave the city’s hustle-bustle to step into a different world that’s all about columns, arches and a courtyard with a fountain. Spread over two storeys, it is designed by Ashiesh Shah and owned by Suren Joshi, who also ran the popular restaurant Pali Village Café which this replaces. The cuisine, however, is not restricted to the desert state, but goes global. Chef Richard D’Souza has come up with stellar dishes like vegan ceviche and roast beef poi. Of course, there is also aloo chaat, keema kachori and palak saag with truffle oil. Do not miss the ghevar for dessert.

ZAO CHA HOUSE

The dimsum menu of this cosy new restaurant in Mumbai runs into several pages. The crispy duck roll, edamame and truffle dimsum, and Chilean sea-bass are no-brainers. But those in the mood to experiment should try the super-soft butter pan-fried turnip cake. If you are fond of baos, leave space for dessert and go for their chocolate bao. Their Chinese tea selection is wide and pairs well with the food.
