If you’re looking for some bhang on Holi, consider these government-approved bhang shops splattered all across the country. By Bayar Jain
An edible mixture crafted using buds, leaves and flowers of marijuana plants, bhang has often swerved into the religious realm, owing to its connection with the Hindu deity, Shiva. Come Holi, and its rampant sale and consumption ensue, largely by mixing it in a sweet milky drink called thandai. If you’re hoping to include this in your celebrations this year, consider shopping from these government-authorised bhang shops.
1. Gopa Chowk, Jaisalmer

Located just outside the famous Jaisalmer Fort at Gopa Chowk, the authorised bhang shop embodies simplicity in its character. Run by Dr Bhang—named so for his ability to debunk cannabis-related doubts and questions on its potency—this bhang shop has been around for half a decade (and counting). Here, you can find cannabis interlaced in various avatars. Think, chocolate-chip cookies, bhang hot chocolate, mango juice with bhang, bhang cake and more. One of the strongest offerings here is the 24 Hour No Toilet, No Shower lass, which includes up to five teaspoons of cannabis—a number that can be increased depending upon the consumer’s threshold.
2. Assi Ghat, Varanasi

A bustling religious destination, it’s no surprise that Varanasi—and Assi Ghat, in particular—has many thriving government-approved bhang shops. Of the many shops here, however, Green Lassi Corner cosied amid the city’s bylanes steals the spotlight for its wide array of weed-infused thandai and lassi options. Devoid of any indoor seating, this small joint is famous for concocting strong drinks topped with creamy malai.
3. Hippie Island, Hampi

True to its name, Hampi’s Hippie Island doesn’t disappoint with regards to providing a ‘chill’ vibe. When here, greens fill every inch of the space—landscapes, artworks, and dishes! While weed-infused lassis are common on the island, a cafe named Ravi’s Rose is believed to provide the most delicious (and potent) variation. This hangout spot, however, transcends green drinks. They even serve delectable dosas and scrumptious thalis—a sure-shot cure for those munchies, perhaps?
4. Hatibagan, Kolkata

Located in Hatibagan, Shiv Assram is touted as one of the few legal cannabis shops in Kolkata. This beverage corner has been in the business since 1973, tirelessly whipping smoothies, lassis, and thandais every year. Ordinarily, the shop offers ‘regular’ drinks in various flavours and combinations. However, as Holi and Shivratri inch closer, greens seep into the glasses with an option of bhang-infused thandais scooting its way onto the menu as well.
