Perhaps the most famous of all lakes in northeast India, Gurudongmar is an experience that will remain etched in your heart for a lifetime. One of the world’s highest lakes, the awe-inspiring lake is located near the Indo-Tibet border. The lake enjoys a stunning setting with perennial snow peaks all around. The lake serves as a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Sikhs. It is advisable to spend no more than an hour at the lake due to the dizzying altitude.
Loktat Lake, Manipur

Loktak is the largest freshwater lake in the northeast and is also referred to as a miniature island sea. The lake features several ring-shaped landmasses floating on it. These are called phumdis or phumshongs by the locals. Surrounded by colourful water plants and water chestnuts, these phumdis also feature small huts inhabited by locals. To savour the best views of the lake, head to the tourist bungalow on Sendra island by the bank of the lake. You may also climb up to the watchtower at Bebet Ching hillock for equally stunning views.
Umiam Lake, Meghalaya

Umiam Lake is an enormous artificial lake, also known as Barapani by the locals. The lake stretches around the Umian Hydroelectric Project. Nestled amidst sylvan hills that kiss the sky, Umiam is nothing less than a heaven for angling enthusiasts and birdwatchers. The lake also offers water sports like water skiing, cycling, and kayaking. When done soaking in the tranquillity at the lake, grab a bite at the adjoining Orchid Lake Resort, a government-run facility with great views.

Tam Dil lake or Tam lake literally means lake of mustard. The lake is located a 3 hours drive away from Aizawl and makes for a great day excursion. The serenity of Mizoram’s largest lake is mesmerising, to say the least. The lake is also famed for its variety of fish. Surrounded by lush mountains and virgin forests, the lake serves as a popular picnic spot. From here, you can also opt for a drive to the resort village of Saitual, 10km from the lake.
Mehao Lake, Arunachal Pradesh

Set amidst virgin forests, Mehao Lake is a part of the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary. Located 14km from Roing, this natural stretch of water is among the most picturesque spots in Arunachal Pradesh. Its clear water attracts large flocks of wild ducks. The surrounding mountain-scape is rich in flora and fauna. The lake is reached by trekking a pathway through the forest. You can also enjoy a relaxing boat ride on the lake and appreciate the scenic Mishmi hills. Most people club their visit with Sally Lake.

Tsomgo Lake is often visited along the popular Nathu La Pass. Tourists come here to amble past the lake on a yak back and marvel at the stunning vistas. The clear azure blue waters of the lake are a sight to behold. The lake is nestled at a height of 12,400 feet and derives its water from snowy mountain slopes that surround it. In winter, Tsomgo Lake is often entirely frozen.

One of the highest lakes in the world, Tso Lhamo is also known as Chho Lhamo or Cholamoo Lake. The glacial lake sits at an altitude of 17,490 feet. The crystal blue lake makes for a great offbeat spot since most tourists skip it for the more touristy Gurudongmar. Expect a riot of colours with beautiful rhododendrons and orchids. The lake can be visited from North Sikkim’s Lachen.
Ward’s Lake, Meghalaya

Also called Nan-Polok by locals, Ward’s Lake is a prominent tourist attraction in Shillong. The horseshoe-shaped lake is located at a kissing distance from the city centre near the Raj Bhawan. Embellished with isles and bridges, the lake offers boating facilities. You may also fancy a leisurely stroll along the winding pathways that meander around green mounds and gorgeous flower beds surrounding the lake.
Shilloi Lake, Nagaland

Nestled in Lutsam village in the Phek district, Shilloi is a lake steeped in legend. According to a popular lore, it is believed that no one can drown in the lake. The lake is encompassed by tall pines and offers stunning views. The lake is also popular among seasoned anglers.
