Waichin Valley in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh is one of the state’s best-kept secrets. Also known as Magic Valley, the quaint and picturesque valley sits above the Malana village. Most backpackers arrive here after a short hike from Malana Dam to enjoy a night or two of camping with their friends and loved ones. Why Waichin?

There was a time when Kasol used to be considered an offbeat hill station. A decade ago, one would only find young Israeli backpackers who used to come to India after completing their mandatory military service. Their purpose was clear. To consume the best quality of cannabis in the world. Kasol’s popularity increased, and Indians started flocking it in search of peace and good vibes. As soon as the hippie culture of Kasol caught the fancy of young Indians, Kasol was not the same anymore.
Free-spirited travellers started looking for quieter alternatives and ended up exploring the pleasures of nearby villages of Malana and Tosh. Today, even Malana and Tosh have become mainstream, with chic cafes and homestays springing up like wild mushrooms. This is where Waichin Valley comes into the picture.
Largely untouched by domestic tourists, the lesser-explored Waichin Valley, also spelt as Weichin Valley, is a sheer paradise for solitude seekers and lovers of the great outdoors. On offer are incredible views of majestic Himalayan ranges like Animal Pass, Tiger Mouth Peak, and Khiksa Taj Glacier. The valley is truly blessed with an abundant wealth of flora and fauna and makes for an amazing getaway for solace-seeking city dwellers.

To reach Malana Dam, you have to catch an early morning bus from Jari, which is conveniently located between Bhuntar and Kasol. It will take you two hours to reach Malana Dam from Jari.
The trek starts from Malana Dam and takes you along the Malana stream and dense forests of pines and deodars. It’s always good to have an interesting local along hiking routes like this one. You’ll also come across two gorgeous waterfalls on your way up to Waichin.
On reaching Waichin after three to four hours, you can simply relax at your campsite and soak in the immense scenic beauty that the place has to offer. Nights are typically blissful for stargazing and merrymaking with your friends. You’d have to carry your own food and beverages though as Waichin only has a few small shops. You may also request your tour organiser to arrange food and camping tents.
Day 2: Hike down to Malana Dam
