Perched at an altitude of 8,000 feet, Gurez Valley is located approximately 120 kilometres away from Srinagar. The valley is surrounded by the majestic Himalayas and has the Kishanganga river—which merges with Jhelum in Pakistan—flowing through its plains. The valley was hidden under a blanket of anonymity till 2007, after which it was finally opened up to tourists, rendering it one of the most untouched parts of the region.

Named after a Kashmiri poetess, the Habba Khatoon mountain peak is the star here. It overlooks the town of Dawar. The sun rays cutting through the mountain ranges bring a mystical touch to this attraction. The Razdan Pass here is the only high altitude road between Srinagar and Gurez. The breathtaking landscapes compensate for the bumpy road trip. However, it is impossible to keep driving on this road without making a quick pitstop—either to admire the scenic beauty or to take some amazing shots for the ‘gram!

If you are looking for a spiritual retreat amid Gurez’ tranquillity, visit the Peer Baba shrine. Maintained beautifully by the Indian army, the shrine overlooks the entire valley. The shrine’s beauty coupled with the views of the valley will leave you in pure spiritual bliss. On the other hand, one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, Wular lake, should be a must-visit agenda on your itinerary. Located on the route to Gurez, the lake’s mesmerising aura will leave you spellbound.

Another waterbody famous to Gurez is the Kishanganga river. The valley is located along the banks of this river. The restless but beautiful Kishanganga is said to display one of the most beautiful sunrises in Kashmir. If fishing interests you, then trout-fishing is a pretty popular sport here. Join the locals if you wish to give it a try.
The valley’s central township is in Dawar, a beautiful town complete with crooked wooden villages. Apart from hospitals, ATMs, petrol pumps, and restaurants, it has everything you would need to have a wholesome trip.

The tourism department of Jammu and Kashmir has set up various hotels in Dawar that can be booked in advance. If you prefer living with the locals and learning more about their culture, the valley also has many homestay options.
Good to know
Gurez valley might be a slice of paradise, but it is important to remember that it is located in the distressed region of Kashmir close to the border. There are various check-posts, army camps and razor-wired fences scattered throughout the valley to ensure safety. However, it is advisable to stick to main roads and not wander off-track. Moreover, you are required to carry your ID card at all times to get through these check-posts. Having said that, there are plenty of trekking and camping opportunities in Gurez itself that can be experienced without crossing any borders.
