Bulky air charts may soon be a thing of the past in the New Zealand skies. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it was considering following an American lead where the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved a trial scheme allowing pilots to use iPads instead of 15kg flight manuals. A CAA spokesman told press that the organisation had received requests from flight operators to conduct a similar trial down under and is consulting various international bodies on the safety aspects of such a move. Alaskan Airlines is member to the American trial and pilots have offered positive feedback, saying the iPad is more nimble and faster to use, which saves time in emergency situations.
