Beijing-Shanghai rail link set to open

Published on Jun 17, 2011

A new high-speed rail line linking Beijing and Shanghai, which is set to open later this month, will slash journey times between the cities to a little less than five hours. Travelling at a speed of 300km/ hour (180 mph) the new highspeed rail link will accommodate 90 trains daily carrying 1004 passengers each. Compared with 50 flights per day currently linking the two cities, the train system is expected to have a signifi cant impact on the airline business. Each train will be equipped with business class, fi rst class and second-class seating.
