China to develop Monkey Kingdom theme park

Published on Jun 1, 2011

Developers in China are planning to create new theme park based on the classic 16th Century Chinese book, ‘Journey to the West’. Bloomberg reported that the CNY10 billion (US$1.5 billion) Monkey Kingdom is the brainchild of Zhonghong Real Estate Co, which is planning to create the 300-hectare integrated resort development on the outskirts of Beijing. It will include conference centres and hotels, as well as residential and retail elements. According to Zhonghong’s Chairman, Wang Yonghong, the Monkey Kingdom will be a “Disneyquality park that tells the stories important to China”. Journey to the West is a classic tale of a Chinese monk who is accompanied on his travels by three animals, including a monkey known as Sun Wukong.
