Published on May 25, 2011

The airport closures resulting from the Iceland volcanic ash cloud have spread to continental Europe, with flights in and out of northern Germany are expected to be hit on Wednesday. Germany’s Meteorological Service said that airspace over several northern cities, including Bremen and Hamburg, will close from 5am local time as the ash cloud spreads eastwards. The BBC reported Europe’s air traffi c management body, Eurocontrol, as saying that approximately 500 fl ights were cancelled in Europe yesterday, mostly in Scotland and northern England. Major airports aff ected included Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle. IATA commented on the incident for the fi rst time yesterday, saying that it is “encouraged” by the response of European aviation authorities.
