Authorities in Seoul have announced that the first phase of a huge floating island in the Han River will be officially opened this Saturday (21 May). The island is thought to be the largest artificial floating island in the world, and the first to be equipped with a convention centre.

It is scheduled for full completion in September this year. The complex has been developed under three key themes - exhibition and convention, culture, and aquatic-leisure. Islet 1, the biggest of the three islets, is three stories high and measures 10,845 square metres. It includes a 700-seat convention hall. Islet 2 is three stories high and measures 5,373 square metres, and will focus on cultural events. Islet 3, two stories high, measures 4,164 square metres area and will offer aquatic sports, such as yachting.
