Best Western International has signed its first ever hotel in Iraq. At the company’s Asian headquarters in Bangkok last week, Best Western’s Vice President of International Operations for Asia & the Middle East, Glenn de Souza, sealed the contract with the property’s owners, Golden Mountains Company.
Located on 5,000m² of land in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, 400km from Baghdad, the new Best Western Premier hotel is intended to serve demand from the region’s oil and gas industries. Construction will start in September this year, with opening scheduled for Q1 2014. Facilities will include a spa, swimming pool, top-floor restaurant and casino, with extensive conference and banqueting facilities and a business centre. The 18-storey property will open with 160 rooms, but the design of the building is such that there is scope to add a further five stories and 48 rooms in a rooftop extension.
