Published on Mar 7, 2011
China’s expanding highway network will reach all counties in Tibet by 2015, China’s Transport Minister, Li Shenglin, has said. Xinhua reported Li as telling parliament that investment in Tibet’s highways would double in the 2011-15 period, without specifying a fi gure. The mountainous region will have a road network extending 70,000km by the end of 2015, almost 20% up from the current 58,000km. Included in this plan will be a ‘Four-Hour Economic Zone’ plan, which will develop expressways from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, to four major hubs - Xigaze, Nagqu, Shannan and Nyingchi – so that they can all be accessed within four hours drive.
