Published on Nov 30, 2010
Nineteen of Indonesia’s 68 active volcanoes are now at ‘alert’ status - the second highest warning level – the Jakarta Post has reported the country’s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry as saying. The most serious threat is at Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, but eruptions are also possible at volcanoes in Aceh, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Maluku and other locations. Indonesia is still recovering from the eruption of Mount Merapi in Central Java, which killed more than 300 people. Merapi is one of the volcanoes on alert status.
