Mount Merapi eruptions continue

Mount Merapi, the volcano in Central Java that has been erupting since late October, continued to shoot clouds of ash into the sky yesterday. Amid reports that the eruptions are becoming less intense, Channel NewsAsia reported an Indonesian government offi cial as saying that an alert status remains in force around the volcano, which has so far killed 194 people. “Merapi’s intensity has slowed down, but small eruptions still occur and its status is still alert,” government volcanologist Raden Sukhyar said. “The volcano still belches volcanic ash.” Yogyakarta’s airport is expected to reopen on Monday, although airport officials are monitoring the situation.
