Authorities in Guangzhou have withdrawn their offer of providing free Metro services during November, following the unprecedented response to the scheme. Xinhua reported that more than eight million people crammed on to the city’s Metro network on the first day of the free travel scheme – approximately double the usual number - forcing the closure of several lines. The scheme, launched in conjunction with the 2010 Asian Games which is being hosted in the southern Chinese city, will now be replaced with a travel subsidy programme.
