Major new eruption at Mount Merapi
Published on Nov 4, 2010
Mount Merapi in Indonesia’s Central Java region erupted again yesterday, sending huge clouds of gas into the sky. Channel NewsAsia cited witnesses as saying that lava and burning rocks were also shooting from the crater of the 2,900-metre volcano, sparking panic among residents. An volcanologist working for the Indonesian government was reported saying that Wednesday’s eruption was “bigger than the previous two”, referring to the 26 and 30 October eruptions which killed 36 people. Passengers flying to either Yogyakarta or Solo airports are advised to check the status of their flights, following the diversion of services earlier this week.
