World Expo closes in Shanghai

At midnight on Sunday, the largest World Expo in history drew to a close in Shanghai. Around 8,000 people including Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, turned out to see the fl ags of all participating nations being lowered to mark the end of the 184-day event. The 2010 World Expo broke a string of records, attracting 246 exhibiting nations and international organisations and more than 73 million visitors. The Shanghai event also set a record for the largest daily attendance, when more than 1.03 million visitors crammed into the site on 16 October. “Undeterred by the searing heat or soaking rain, they (the visitors) waited patiently in long lines to witness this much anticipated event... Through such extensive participation, Expo 2010 Shanghai has truly brought together people around the globe,” Wen said. The Expo site will now be transformed into a cultural and commercial centre.
