More than 300 people are now known to have died in the twin natural disasters that hit Indonesia earlier this week. Rescuers in West Sumatra’s Mentawai Islands have so far recovered 272 bodies, after 10 villages were completely destroyed by a tsunami. Channel NewsAsia reported local officials as saying however, that a further 412 people remain missing, leading to the sad likelihood that the death toll could rise further.Meanwhile in Central Java, 29 people are reported to have died
in following the eruption of Mount Merapi. Officials said that more than 40,000 people had been relocated from the volcano’s slopes, but
thousands more refused to move.
