Dozens die in Indonesia train crash

Published on Oct 4, 2010

Thirty-six people died and dozens more were injured when a passenger train crashed at a station in Central Java. The Jakarta- Surabaya train slammed into another stationary train at Petarukan Pemalang station on Saturday. According to local media reports, the incident was the result of a signaling error, although it is unclear at this stage whether it was a technical fault or human error. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an investigation. “Should the investigation uncover negligence, there will be sanctions”, the Jakarta Post reported a spokesperson for the President as saying.
