Mount Fuji sees record number of climbers

More than 250,000 people have climbed Mount Fuji, during the current mountaineering season – a record for Japan’s highest peak. According to Japan’s NHK World news service, authorities in Fujiyoshida City, located at the foot of the mountain, said that since 1 July almost 251,000 people have taken to the slopes. However the accident rate on the mountain has also risen, with three people having died on the 3,800m peak in the past two months.
