The Thai government yesterday gave the green light to a THB62 billion (US$2 billion) expansion plan of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport. According to reports, the expansion will eventually increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 60 million, up from the current 45 million. The project will also see the construction of a new passenger terminal, to be located approximately 800 metres south of the existing terminal, and linked by an underground rail system. A new concourse will be ableto accommodate 28 aircraft, including the Airbus A380, and there will also be new taxiways, offices buildings and car parking. Plans to develop a third runway were not approved however, due to environmental concerns.
