Plane crashes in northern China – 43 dead

A passenger plane has crashed in China’s northern Heilongjiang province, killing at least 43 people. According to Xinhua, the Henan Airlinesoperated aircraft was carrying 96 people when it crashed on landing at Lindu Airport, Yichun City. The Embraer ERJ-190 plane was travelling from to Yichun from Harbin – a route the airline served three times a week – when it came down in forests close to the airport. Forty-three people have been confi rmed dead, while a further 53 have been taken to hospital, the report cited Yichun’s Vice Mayor, Wang Xuemei, as saying. There is no official account of what caused the crash, although reports suggest that the plane broke into two as it approached the runway. A recovery operation is underway.
