Eight HK tourists killed in Manila bus siege
Published on Aug 24, 2010
Eight Hong Kong tourists died in Manila yesterday after their tour bus was hijacked by an armed man. The bus, which was carrying 22 tourists, including children, was boarded by an expoliceman carrying an M-16 assault rifle, leading to a long stand-off with security forces, with the drama being played out on live TV. Seven of the hostages, including children, were released as the day went on, raising hopes that the siege would end. Negotiations broke down however, and Philippine security forces stormed the bus. Philippine President, Benigno Aquino, was later reported saying that eight tourists were confirmed dead, while seven others are thought to have been taken to hospital. Hong Kong has since issued its highest travel advisory level, a ‘black alert’, for travel to Philippines.
