China mudslide death toll climbs

Close to 1,200 are now known to have died in northwest China’s Gansu province after heavy rains triggered mudslides on Sunday, Xinhua has reported. At least 1,148 people have been confirmed dead but the toll is expected to rise considerably after heavy downpours triggered landslides and mud-rock flows in the province’s Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures.
