Rabies problem in Bali
Published on Aug 2, 2010
Tourists will want to think twice before skipping their rabies jabs if heading to Bali this summer. According to local press, the island is in the grip of a rabies outbreak which is deemed to have taken 78 lives on the island in the past two years. The most recent victim was a 40 year-old woman last week. The Indonesian government says there is a serious problem with stray dogs, reporting 30,000 bites already this year. The World Health Organisation recommended mass vaccinations, but with a shortage of vaccines, the government is resorting to a mass cull.
