Japan trials toll-free highways
Published on Jun 30, 2010
The Japanese government has stopped collecting tolls on sections of 37 rural expressways, in line with a key promise in last year’s election. According to local media reports, the pilot programme will see all expressways in Okinawa, and several sections in Yamagata, Shimane and Oita prefectures become toll-free for all vehicle types. The total length of highways covered by the trial project is 1,652km, or 20% of the country’s national expressway network.
