China storms kill 147

The death toll from flash floods and landslides that hit southern and eastern China in the past week has reached 147, Chinese authorities have said. A further 93 people are missing, while more than a million have been evacuated, Channel NewsAsia reported the country’s Ministry of Civil Affairs as saying yesterday. Swathes of Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces have been affected as torrential rain battered the country. The cost of the disaster has reached CNY19.7 billion (US$2.9 billion), the ministry said, with 178,000 homes having been damage and close to 800,000 hectares of farmland being affected. Further heavy rains have been forecast.
